THE WEEKEND AWAY: A Lifetime Film Set In A Beautiful Location

Netflix
Directed by Kim Farrant
Stars: Leighton Meester, Christina Wolfe, Ziad Bakri, Luke Norris, Amar Bukvić, and Iva Mihalić
The Lifetime vibes were real in Netflixes latest murder thriller. Every year Netflix drops one or two of these sub genre films, and so far they’ve been to no avail. We’ve seen The Flight Attendant on HBO tackle the topic of waking up to a murder scene and a lack of memory about what happened, except everything that The Flight Attendant did right in tackling the subject with careful precision and intrigue- gets bumbled here.
A weekend getaway to Croatia that goes awry when a woman is accused of killing her best friend. As she attempts to clear her name and uncover the truth, her efforts unearth a painful secret.
The script doesn’t work one bit, and as we go further into the disappearance of Wolfe’s character the story drives further into being non sensical. A plethora of possible murderers arise within the city, and yet majority of them are quite clearly dead ends that don’t make any sense to have truly committed the crime. Leading to the viewers options being dropped very quickly to a select one or two- and the rest of the time just being fluff. It tries its best to drop a last minute twist to get the viewers excitement, but after a stagnant run from start to finish its hard for the viewer to have any care in the twist- diminishing any proper success of the twist landing.
Croatia is beautiful, and there are some really nice shots of the country. It’s definitely cracked the list of countries I would love to check out, just not under the circumstances of the film.
Acting wise, it’s fine- no one stands out as particularly strong. Ziad Bakri does his best as a supporting character- but there’s just not enough substance in the writing to even care for him that much.
The Flight Attendant on Crave and HBO is worth the stream it takes the subject and does a really great job with the series. It may be something you should add to your watchlist if The Weekend Away was something you were considering watching in the next few days.
